3 Days in Krabi, Thailand: Itinerary with Top Things to Do

What to do in Krabi?

Have you decided to visit Krabi during your stay in Thailand?

Good idea!

With its karstic cliffs and small islands with idyllic beaches, it is the ideal destination for a dream vacation.

To help you organize your trip, I have prepared a complete guide to Krabi. You will find all the things to do in the province and the surrounding area, as well as my advice and good plans to make the most of it.

In addition to places not to be missed and must-see places of interest, I also offer a selection of the best hotels in Krabi, classified according to your budget.

So what to do and see in Krabi?

Visit Krabi: the must-sees

1. Krabi Town

To start this Krabi tourist guide, I suggest a short walk in the city itself, in order to discover the main monuments.

What to see in Krabi Town?

1) Wat Kaew Ko Wararam: a pretty white temple (not to be confused with that of Chiang Rai ) which is accessed by a staircase decorated with dragon sculptures. Inside, you can admire a golden Buddha.

The temple is located in the heart of the city, on Maharaj Street. Free entry.

2) The Andaman Art Museum, which opened very recently, opposite Wat Kkaew. This contemporary art museum brings together a collection of paintings and sculptures by Thai and international artists.

3) The Krabi market: a local market and really not touristy where you will have the opportunity to eat for next to nothing. A Pad Thai costs barely 40 Bahts and you can end up with fresh fruit at 20 Bahts, all accompanied by coconut water at 30 Bahts. Less than 100 Bahts for main course, dessert and drink!

It is also located in Maharaj Street.

4) Krabi Weekend Night Market: Krabi Town’s night market is near Chao Fah wharf at Maharaj 8 Alley. From Friday to Sunday evening, you can test the delicious Thai cuisine sold in the many street stalls.

Dance and music performances are also offered.

5) The Khao Kanab Nam: these 2 karstic rocks in the shape of crab claws and culminating at 100 meters high have become the symbol of the city.

You can admire them from the river in Krabi Town or simply go there by long tail boat (the typical Thai boats). Boats depart from Chao Fah wharf and the crossing takes just 15 minutes.

The discovery of the 2 rock formations is generally associated with a visit to the caves which are right next to them (entrance at 30 Bahts) and a passage through the mangroves. You will end the tour with a stop at a fish farm in the fishing village of Ko Klang.

The trip lasts 2 hours and costs between 450 and 600 Bahts for the boat. The longer you are from, the less you will pay.

Tips for your Krabi itinerary:

During your walk in Krabi Town, be sure to raise your head and admire the rather original traffic lights with the statues therein.

2. Tiger Temple / Wat Pham Suea

The Tiger Temple or Tiger Cave Temple is one of the main places of interest to visit in Krabi.

It is less than ten kilometers from the city center.

Built on top of a hill, the upper part of the temple is accessible by a staircase that has no less than 1237 steps to be precise. And to make matters worse, the stairs are really super steep, which makes the climb quite sporty. Take your time, pack some water and you should be fine!

At the top, if the weather is clear, you can enjoy a 360° view of the whole province. If it has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Krabi despite the arduous climb, it’s not for nothing!

Count between 1h and 1h30 for the round trip.

On the site, on the right side before the stairs to go up to the temple, you can also take a walk in the part called “Wonderland”. To reach it, you will also have to go through a staircase, but much smaller than the one leading to the top.

You will also find the “Tiger cave”, the cave which gave its name to the temple. Tiger paw prints were found there, suggesting that a feline occupied it.

The walk of about thirty minutes through the jungle also allows you to observe some very large trees.

Practical information: entrance to the temple is free. Ladies, remember to bring something to cover your shoulders and legs.

All around and inside the enclosure there are several bars, restaurants and shops as well as toilets.

Tips for your Krabi itinerary:

To reach the Tiger Cave Temple from Krabi Town, you have to take the red song taew (collective taxi). They start from Utarakit street but you can wave to them on the road and they will stop if they are not full.

You also have the option of a tuk tuk or a taxi, but it will necessarily be more expensive.

The last possibility is to book an excursion including the visit of the temple with the discovery of Krabi Town and the market. You will find all the information on this outing in Krabi with driver by clicking here!

3. Ao Nang

The corner of Ao Nang is one of the essentials of a stay in Krabi.

It is the main seaside resort in the province. It is here that you will find the closest beaches to the center, about 20 km away.

Many people also choose to stay there to be by the sea rather than in the city.

The Ao Nang area includes several beautiful beaches:

  • Ao Nang Beach: a large sandy beach bordered by many bars, restaurants and tour desks. All the tourist activity of Krabi and the surrounding area is concentrated there. It is for example from here that you can take the boat to reach Railay (I tell you about it a little further down in this article).
  • Noppharat Thara Beach: another large beach with less crowds than Ao Nang. Also very pretty and wilder. On the other hand, there is no departure of boats from this beach.
  • The Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas beach which is located in a protected bay. To get there, you have to go through a staircase and a path in the forest that starts towards the end of Ao Nang beach. Otherwise, you can also rent a kayak to get there. There are usually not many people except hotel guests.

If you stay in Ao Nang during your Thailand itinerary, it is also the best way to visit the surrounding islands. All tour operators offer excursions to Koh Phi Phi, the Hong Islands or the 4 Islands with departure from Ao Nang Beach.

I give you the details for all these excursions in the rest of this article.

Ao Nang is also famous for its very beautiful sunset. If you spend some time in the area, you can of course admire it from the beach, but if you want to change a bit and do a fun activity, I recommend you book a sunset cruise .

The excursion, which begins in the early afternoon, offers several snorkeling stops before concluding with a sunset dinner on the islands of the Andaman Sea.

The price includes the cruise, the meal, unlimited soft drinks and fruit, as well as snorkeling equipment.

To book your sunset cruise here.

Tips for your Krabi itinerary:

Only a few kilometers from Ao Nang is the Fossil Shell Beach, a cemetery of fossilized shells.

On paper, it may make you want to, but in reality there is not much to see except for a few slabs of minerals (strongly resembling concrete slabs) with fossils in them.

I recommend it only to lovers of geology. Especially since the area is part of Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, you will have to pay 200 Bahts to access it.

4. Railay

Railay is one of the must-see places in Krabi province.

To go to Railay, you have to take the boat from Ao Nang Beach. You do not need to book your trip in advance. Just go there and buy your ticket directly at the hut on the beach.

The fare is 200 Baht per person for a boat trip of less than 10 minutes.

Once you get to Railay, you’ll quickly find that it’s one of the nicest places to go to the beach in Krabi. The setting is truly heavenly! On the other hand, do not expect to be alone, there are really a lot of people.

What to see in Railay, Krabi Province:

1) Railay West Beach: it is on this beach that you will arrive by boat, half of the beach is also reserved for landing boats.

Flanked by large karst cliffs, this large beach of fine sand is really super pretty. You can swim, sunbathe and rent kayaks and paddles.

2) Railay East Beach: this beach is not really suitable for swimming, especially at low tide. Rather, it is used for boats that disembark and embark people staying in nearby hotels. On the left, there is still a small quiet beach easily accessible.

3) Between the beach of Railay West and that of Railay East, there is a small tourist village which includes several restaurants, shops, hotels and excursion and information offices.

4) The Phra Nang Nai Cave: a cave that can be visited for 200 Bahts but frankly, it’s not interesting.

5) The Railay viewpoint: to get there you will have to go through a very steep climb with ropes for about 20 minutes. If you don’t have sneakers, it’s better to go barefoot than in flip flops: it’s muddy and slippery.

You will be rewarded for your effort by the view that will be offered to you at the top!

You can then continue the walk by going to the Princess Lagoon, a crater filled with water with a small cave on the side. The descent to get there is a bit difficult and even requires a bit of climbing at the end.

Krabi itinerary 3 days

6) Phra Nang Beach: clearly the most beautiful beach in Railay, the place is really superb, worthy of a postcard landscape! For me, it is one of the most beautiful beaches I have seen during my Thailand itinerary.

On the left, at the very end, go see the Phra Nang Cave. Legend has it that the cave is inhabited by the spirit of a princess whose boat ran aground here after a big storm. Thai fishermen come to deposit wooden phalluses there so that the princess grants them an abundant catch.

If you cross the cave and go to the other side of the rocks, there is a small viewpoint.

Completely opposite Ao Nang Cave, at the very end of the beach, you can also take a path that climbs and joins a large cave.

However, you will need a flashlight to explore it, as the place is not at all equipped. It is not possible to continue the path further and descend on the other side on Railay West Beach, unless you have climbing equipment.

And speaking of rock climbing, it’s one of the main reasons people come to spend some time in Railay. The peninsula is known to be home to almost 700 climbing routes.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced climber, you will have plenty to do in Railay. You can choose to take a course of a few hours or even decide to do a course of several days.

To book a 4 hour rock climbing course at Railay, I advise you to click on the button below.

The price includes pick-up from your hotel in Krabi, Ao Nang or Railay, an experienced instructor and equipment rental.

The guide is really very nice and you are guaranteed to do this activity in complete safety with equipment that meets international standards.

Tips for your Krabi itinerary:

If you are looking for a nice beach with fewer people, I recommend going to Tonsai Beach. It is located between Ao Nang Beach and Railay West Beach.

Accessible only by boat or by a path at the Railay Phutawan Resort, it is more isolated and you will be quiet there.

5. 4 Islands Boat Tour

Have you visited Krabi Town? Have you discovered the surrounding beaches and you don’t know what to do in Krabi?

So, I now suggest that you go and discover the most beautiful islands in the area during boat trips.

One of the most famous is the one that takes you to 4 small islands near Krabi:

  • Koh Poda
  • Koh Kai, nicknamed Chicken Island because of its chicken-shaped rock
  • Koh Tup
  • Phra Nang Cave (in Railay)

Departures are every morning from Ao Nang beach. A boat will pick you up and take you around the 4 islands, stopping each time so you can swim and snorkel.

The price includes pick-up in front of your hotel, the day on the boat, snorkeling equipment, lunch and unlimited water.

You can book this one day boat trip by clicking here.

The excursion I have just told you about is done by speedboat but if you wish, it is also available by longtail boat, the traditional Thai boats.

You have to book it by clicking directly here!

Finally, if you rather prefer to visit the 4 islands around Krabi in the afternoon (departure around 1:30 p.m.) to be able to watch the sunset afterwards, this is the excursion for you (click here)!

6. Excursion to Koh Phi Phi

Another essential excursion from Krabi and Ao Nang is the one allowing you to spend a day on Koh Phi Phi.

If you haven’t already visited this island on your Thailand itinerary, then now is the time!

The island of Koh Phi Phi is famous worldwide for the famous beach of Maya Bay where part of the film “The Beach” with Leonardo di Caprio was filmed .

Unfortunately the success was such that every day dozens of boats arrived to land thousands of people on the beach. This influx was disastrous for the ecosystem and the corals, which were seriously damaged.

The beach was therefore completely closed for several years (and even today the authorities can decide to close it for a few months in the year to preserve it). And even if access is authorized during your visit, it is now forbidden to swim there.

But don’t worry, you will still have the opportunity to admire it from the boat!

In addition to Maya Bay, the excursion includes:

  • Snorkeling in the Hin Klang reef
  • The visit of the cave of the Vikings where there are murals
  • Snorkeling in Pileh Lagoon
  • A passage through the bay of monkeys
  • Lunch on Phi Phi Don Island
  • A relaxing break on the beach at Bamboo Island

To book this excursion to Koh Phi Phi here.

Tips for your Krabi itinerary:

If you have chosen to go to Krabi for a short time, you can also book an excursion to discover Koh Phi Phi + the 4 islands mentioned above of Koh Poda, Koh Tup, Chicken Island and Phra Nang Cave.

A 2 in 1 excursion, very practical to see everything in 1 day instead of 2.

To book directly by clicking here!

7. Hong Islands Excursion

Last possible boat excursion during your stay in Krabi: exploring the Hong Islands.

Embark on a total day of relaxation with only snorkeling and swimming in the turquoise water.

Round-trip transfers from your hotel, day boat trip, snorkeling equipment, lunch and guide are included in the price.

To take advantage of it, you just have to click on here.

This Hong Islands boat trip from Krabi is also available with an afternoon departure so you can enjoy a barbecue on the beach at sunset.

8. Emerald Pool /Hot Springs

I now offer you another idea for day trips from Krabi, but this time on dry land: the emerald pool and the hot springs.

Located about fifty kilometers from Krabi, the Emerald Pool (Sa Morakot in Thai) is one of the most popular tourist sites in Krabi. It is frequented by both tourists and Thais, who love to come here with their families on weekends.

The swimming pool is in fact a natural pool in which you can bathe in spring water with an incredible emerald green color. On the site, in addition to the swimming part, you can also walk on the paths and go to another natural swimming pool: the Blue Pool (swimming not authorized).

From the parking lot, you have to walk a little less than 1 km to reach the emerald pool. Entrance to the nature reserve costs 200 Baht per person.

As there is no public transport to get there, the best is either to rent a scooter or go through an organized tour.

If you choose the latter option, the excursion, in addition to the Emerald Pool, also offers to take you to the hot springs fed by a waterfall with water at 40°.

You will end the day at the temple of the tiger, which I already mentioned at the beginning of this article.

To book this Emerald Pool + Hot Springs + Tiger Cave tour, just click here.

9. Khao Phanom Bencha National Park

For a change from the long sandy beaches and islands, I recommend that you take a trip to Khao Phanom Bencha National Park during your vacation in Krabi.

It is located just 20 km north of the city.

The park is the perfect place to go hiking in Krabi. It has several paths to walk through the jungle and observe the fauna and flora.

Also not to be missed is the Huay Toh waterfall made up of several levels and whose main fall is 70 meters high. You can even take a dip in it!

To go to Khao Phanom Bencha National Park, you will need to rent a scooter, car or book a tuk tuk or taxi for the day.

Entrance to the park is 200 Bahts per person + 20 Bahts for the scooter.

10. Tab Kak Hang Nak Nature Trail

Visiting Krabi is also being able to enjoy nature.

If you like hiking, in addition to Khao Phanom Bencha National Park, you can also do the Tab Kak Hang Nak Nature Trail.

The trail that climbs 3.7 km allows, once at the top, to contemplate a panoramic view of the province of Krabi and the islands.

This trail is quite physical, so don’t go in flip flops. Sneakers or even hiking shoes required to climb the stony path. And remember to bring enough water.

Allow about 2 hours to reach the summit.

Entrance to the site is free but it is appreciated to leave a tip to the rangers who welcome you and give you some explanations.

Here too, no public transport to reach the start of the trail. From Krabi (40 km), it will be by scooter, car, tuk tuk or taxi.

The time to go there, to go up, to take the pictures, to go down and to return to Krabi, count a day.

11. Things to Do in Krabi

If you are a little tired of lazing on the beach, you can practice several sports activities in Krabi (click on the links in orange to book):

  • Zip line and tree climbing. The Ao Nang Fiore Zipline Adventure offers 2 different routes: one for beginners and/or families and a more challenging one. Book here!
  • Sea kayaking in the Thalane mangrove where you can observe crabs, herons and monkeys. If you want to kayak in Krabi, just book your activity here.
  • From the quad.  The route allows you to pass right through the tropical forest.
  • Several tours even offer to combine the quad with the kayak trip, which allows you to do 2 activities in the same day. To be sure to go through a serious agency, you can book this activity here.
  • A horseback ride on the beach if you are wondering what to do in Krabi as a couple!
  • A Thai boxing class to discover one of the country’s most popular sports
  • Du stand up paddle
  • A bike tour with a guide in a national park near Krabi
  • Karting
  • Du buggy
  • You paintball
  • You rafting

12. Visit an Ethical Elephant Sanctuary

Several Krabi agencies also offer sports activities such as quad biking or kayaking + an elephant ride. Knowing how these animals are treated, I strongly advise against it.

If you really want to see elephants, I recommend the Krabi Elephant Sanctuary, which collects abused elephants. Over half a day, you can feed them and participate in their bath.

Round-trip hotel transport to the shrine is included.

If you want to see the elephants during your stay in Krabi, you must book in advance.

13. Thai Cooking Class in Krabi

As you will see, the food in Thailand is really delicious! Even the simplest dishes like fried rice are very good.

If you want to reproduce the local specialties once back home, I advise you to take advantage of your vacation in Krabi to take a cooking class. In addition to learning to cook 4 dishes and tasting them, you will leave with a recipe booklet!

And what I find very nice is that each person can choose the dishes they want to prepare with, among other things, a green curry, a pad thai, a spicy shrimp soup, a chicken with coconut milkmango sticky rice, surry pasta etc…

What to do around Krabi?

After doing all the things I tell you about in this Krabi guide, it’s time to continue your Thailand itinerary!

From Krabi province, you can reach other famous places like Koh Lanta or Phuket very easily .

14. Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta is one of the best known islands to visit around Krabi.

To discover the island you just need to rent a scooter and follow the main road in search of the most beautiful beaches.

From Koh Lanta, you can also go on a boat trip to Koh Rok or to the islands of Koh Ngai and Koh Muk.

Phuket is undoubtedly the most touristic island around Krabi.

People come here mainly to party all night and enjoy the superb beaches and water activities during the day.

The island is also an excellent starting point to discover Koh Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay or the Similan Islands.

17. Koh Sriboya / Koh Jum

These 2 names probably mean nothing to you (and I forgive you because I had never heard of them before going to Krabi) and yet these 2 small islands are located between Krabi and Koh Lanta.

They both have a few hotels but are completely preserved from mass tourism and still very authentic.

It’s a great choice if for you vacation means just lazing around and resting! It is a place totally off the beaten track, perfect for a stay in Thailand in relaxed mode.

To reach them, you will need to take a boat in Krabi, or, if you are coming from Koh Lanta, the ferry makes 2 stops on the way to unload passengers.

How many days to visit Krabi?

To visit Krabi, I recommend planning a minimum of 3 days.

How to Get around in Krabi

The most convenient way to get around Krabi, Ao Nang and surrounding areas is to rent a scooter. You are not dependent on schedules and you can do whatever you want during the day.

If you only plan to stay in Krabi Town or Ao Nang, you can also use the song taew (shared taxi). Red connects Fossil Shell / Ao Nang / Krabi / Tiger Cave. The blue, Krabi Town and the airport.

But using the song taew, impossible for example to go to the emerald pool or the national park.

You will then have to book a taxi for the half-day or the day.

If you want to book a car (or even a minibus) with a private driver who will take you to visit the places of your choice, the prices are around 65€ for 2 for 4 hours and 90€ for 2 for 8 hours.

How to Get to Krabi

To get to Krabi, you have several options.

From Koh Lanta

To go to Krabi from Koh Lanta, you will need to take the boat.

The trip takes about 2h30 with 2 stops of barely 5 minutes to disembark passengers who are going to Koh Jum and Koh Siboya. To give you an idea, we paid 350 Bahts per person with the transfer from our hotel in Koh Lanta to the port.

In the boat, you will be offered shuttles to reach your hotel in Krabi, Railay or Ao Nang. The prices are quite high but do not hesitate to negotiate.

Otherwise, when arriving at the port, you will find taxis but the prices are fixed and just as high.

From Koh Phi Phi

The ferry trip from Koh Phi Phi to Krabi takes around 2 hours.

You can book your transfer directly with pick-up in front of your hotel and the boat ticket included.

If you prefer to take a speedboat to reduce the travel time (1 hour), this is also possible. This transfer is to be booked here!

From Phuket

The fastest way to get to Krabi from Phuket is by minibus.

The journey takes just over 3 hours. You have to take the bus to Phuket station or to the airport.

From Bangkok

Krabi has an airport 10 km south of the city. Every day it hosts flights from Bangkok.

Allow barely 1h10 flight to go from Bangkok to Krabi by plane. The price is also super interesting: less than 50 euros per person.

If you are not in a hurry, it is also possible to take a bus to reach Krabi from Bangkok. Departure is at the Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai in Thai).

The journey is 12 hours, so I recommend that you book a VIP bus for more comfort.
