14 Days in Thailand: Ultimate 14-15 Days Itinerary

14 Days in Thailand: What to do and see?

Want to visit Thailand in two weeks?

You are in the right place!

Thanks to the 14-day itinerary in Thailand that I have prepared for you, you can easily organize your stay and discover all the unmissable places of interest and the emblematic cities of the country of smiles.

On the program for the first week: Bangkok, the historic parks of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai as well as a visit to Chiang Mai in the North. And for the second part of the stay, head to the southern islands to enjoy the splendid beaches of PhuketKoh Lanta or Krabi.

For each stage of this itinerary, I also give you my selection of the best accommodations as well as all my advice to make the most of your trip.

So, what to do and see in Thailand in 2 weeks?

Day 1-2: Bangkok

For this 2-week Thailand itinerary, I suggest you land in Bangkok.

From Suvarnabhumi Airport, the quickest and cheapest way to reach your hotel is to take the Airport Rail Link.

It operates from 6 a.m. to midnight with departures every quarter of an hour. You will have to take your token (there is no ticket) at the automatic terminals in the basement of the airport and keep it until the end of your trip to insert it in the exit gate.

The price varies depending on the station at which you stop, knowing that the maximum is 45 baht for the terminus (Phaya Thaï station).

The Airport Rail Link connects to the Skytrain (BTS) and Underground Metro (MRT).

The second solution to get to your hotel from the airport is to take a taxi on the 1st level. You will first have to go through a reservation terminal which will tell you the number of the location where to wait for your taxi.

Fares vary between 250 and 450 Baht for the city center, or even a little more if you get stuck in traffic. Always ask the driver to switch on the meter and do not accept a fixed rate (otherwise you are sure to pay much more).

Finally, you can also book a private transfer in advance online. To be sure to  go through a reliable site, I advise you to  book directly by clicking here!

Also remember to have the address in Thai of your hotel, it will help your driver to find his way among the hundreds of hotels in Bangkok.

Arrived at your hotel, take a good night’s rest to recover from the jet lag and be in good shape the next day.

For your 1st day, we start strong with the visit of 3 emblematic sites of Bangkok:

1) The Grand Palace.

Formerly the residence of Thai rulers, it has several beautifully decorated buildings, palaces and pavilions . Not to be missed: the statue of the Emerald Buddha, in the Royal Chapel and Chakri Mahat Prasat Palace .

Entry to the Grand Palace costs 500 Baht.

To get there, it will be on foot or by taxi. There is no metro nearby.

2) Wat Pho, famous for housing the largest reclining Buddha statue in the city (45 meters long!).

It is located just 5 minutes walk from the Grand Palais. Entrance at 200 Baht.

3) Wat Arun, another well-known temple with a large tower and 4 smaller ones carefully covered with colorful mosaics.

It is across the river from Wat Pho. It is therefore necessary to take the river shuttle (4 Bahts) to cross. It’s practical, it drops you right in front of the temple entrance.

Entrance at 50 Baht.

Tips for your Thailand itinerary:

If you want to visit these 3 sites with a guide, I advise you to book a guided tour here. The only way to have detailed explanations of the places.

After crossing the river again, you can go and discover a little more of Thai culture and history in one of the 2 museums dedicated to it:

  • The Siam Museum, located less than 10 minutes walk from the landing stage. Ideal with children because quite playful. Entrance at 300 Baht.
  • The National Museum of Bangkok, 2 km from the pier. Very interesting and very comprehensive. Entrance at 200 Baht.

After this cultural break, head to Khao San Road, undoubtedly one of the most well-known streets in the city. It is bordered by many shops, bars and restaurants.

At the end of the day, I recommend that you conclude your first day in Bangkok with a cruise on the river. This is the perfect opportunity to admire Bangkok’s temples and buildings illuminated.

Return to your hotel for the night.

For this second day in Bangkok, here are the visits that I suggest you do:

  • The Temple of the Golden Mountain (Wat Saket) whose panoramic terrace allows you to admire the whole city. 50 Baht.
  • Chinatown and Wat Traimit for its 5.5 ton golden Buddha statue.
  • Lumphini Park for a stroll away from traffic and crowds
  • The Siam district, a shopping paradise with its huge shopping centers
  • The Bayoke tower, to be done at the end of the day to contemplate the illuminated city from above. Tickets to climb to the top of the tower can be booked in advance right here.
  • On the same principle, you also have  the King Power Mahanakhon  which is currently  the highest observation platform  in Thailand. Tickets are on sale here!
  • Instead of the tower, if you want a little more entertainment, I suggest you attend muay thai boxing fights, the national sport. Tickets on sale right here!

Tips for your Thailand itinerary:

When visiting temples in Thailand, you must have your legs and shoulders covered. Tank tops and shorts are not allowed for women and sometimes even for men.

Remember to bring a shawl or long skirt/trousers. If you forget, you will find some at 100 Bahts in the shops around the temples.

Day 3: Ayutthaya

For this second leg of your two-week stay in Thailand, leave Bangkok for Ayutthaya, just 75 km away.

As a means of transport, you will have the choice between:

1) The car. I advise you to rent it from Don Muang airport (and not the one by which you arrived) which is on the way to go to Ayutthaya. There is only a 45 minute drive between the 2.

You can rent it for several days and keep it until Chiang Mai.

2) The train: with a train ticket at only 15 Bahts for 2 hours, it is the cheapest solution.

3) The bus:  1h30 at 50 Bahts

4) The minivan:  1 hour at 70 Bahts.

Day 4-5: Sukhothai

For the third stage of this 2-week Thailand itinerary, today I suggest you join Sukhothai,  north of Ayutthaya.

As there are more than 350 km between the 2 cities, I recommend that you plan a day just for the trip.

Here too you have the choice between several means of transport:

  • The car: count 5 hours of road. No problem driving, most of the trip is on a 2-lane highway in very good condition lined with many brand new petrol stations.
  • The bus: you have to take it at the Ayutthaya bus station. Count 6 hours drive for about 300 Bahts per person. There are departures several times a day.
  • The train: Sukhothai does not have a railway station. If you take the train to Ayutthaya, you will have to stop at Phitsalunok (4 hours by train for 700 Bahts) and then take a bus to Sukhothai (1 hour for 50 Bahts).

Spend a first night in Sukhothai.

Wat Mahathat Sukhothai
Wat Mahathat Sukhothai

The next day, dedicate  your day to discovering Sukhothai.

Sukhothai is organized much like Ayutthaya, with temples spread over several areas. The historic park is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

To help you plan this visit, I have prepared a very complete guide with all the answers to the questions you may have:

  • What is the price and hours?
  • What are the temples to see?
  • How long to visit Sukhothai?
  • What is the history of the park?

Day 6-8: Chiang Mai

Today, continuation of this itinerary in Thailand for two weeks in order to reach the province of Chiang Mai.

If you have chosen the option of car rental from the beginning, count 4h30 on the road to cover the 300 km. No particular difficulty, the road is straight and in excellent condition.

For a bus trip, you will take about 6 hours for 300 Bahts. There are frequent departures during the day.

And for the train, you will first have to take a bus from Sukhothai to Phitsalunok (1 hour / 50 Bahts) then the Phitsalunok-Chiang Mai train (6 to 8 hours / between 100 and 600 Bahts).

The best is therefore to count a day’s journey between Sukhothai and Chiang Mai.

Spend the night in Chiang Mai.

14-day Thailand itinerary

Wat Chedi Luang in Chiang Mai

For your last day in Chiang Mai, I recommend that you choose between several options according to your desires:

1) Discover the Doi Suthep National Park which is located at the exit of the city.

It includes in particular the temple of Doi Suthep (30 Bahts). Erected on top of a hill, it is one of the best places to admire the view of the whole province.

In the park, you can also visit the gardens of the winter residence of the royal family (Bhubing Palace / 50 Bahts) and a Hmong village, a mountain ethnic group from the North (10 Bahts).

There are also several waterfalls including Mon Tha Than and Huay Kaew.

The best way to visit the park is by car or scooter. But if you don’t want to drive, you can also take a song taew (collective taxi) from the old town or opt for an organized tour with driver and guide.

2) Spend a day with the elephants in a refuge.

You will have the opportunity to help the keepers feed or wash them. No rides on their backs on the program!

To book in advance here.

3) Take a cooking class: another typical activity of a 2 week tour in Thailand.

Before the course itself, the chef will take you to a market to choose the ingredients and spices needed to make the dishes on the program.

After getting your hands dirty, you can taste your creations and take away all the secrets of Thai cuisine in a small recipe booklet.

Option 2: Koh Yao Noi (3 days)

At the end of the fifth leg of your 2-week stay in Thailand, after Phuket or Krabi, and instead of Koh Lanta, you can also visit Koh Yao Noi.

As on the other islands, for your first day in Koh Yao, I suggest you rent a scooter (300 Bahts) and take a short tour to find some beautiful beaches where you can bask in the sun.

On the second day, do not miss the excursion to the 4 islands which allows you to swim in splendid places with turquoise water and fine sand. You can book it directly at your hotel for around 2500 Bahts for 1 boat (to be divided between the number of passengers).

4 Islands Tour, Koh Yao Noi

On the third and final day on Koh Yao Noi, you can take another boat trip like the one that takes you to James Bond Island and Koh Panyee in Phang Nga Bay (no need to do it again if you’ve already done it in Phuket is the same).

Otherwise, you will also have the possibility of kayaking, walking, swimming… You will find all the different possible choices in our article dedicated to Koh Yao Noi: What to do in Koh Yao Noi?

And here it is, this is where your 2-week Thailand itinerary ends, the next day, take the boat in the opposite direction to Phuket or Krabi and reach the airport.

Tips for your Thailand itinerary:

On Koh Yao Noi, you will have to organize your swimming sessions according to the tide. There are such differences between low and high tides that some beaches become impassable.

One of the few where you can swim all the time (walking on a sandbar to reach the water) is the one in front of the Koh Yao Seaview hotel.

Accommodation in Koh Yao Noi
  • Tha Khao Bay View: Located on the east of the island. Simple bungalow with fan from 25€ per night. Most: the incredible view of the sea, the location in the middle of nature, the kindness of the owners. An excellent choice for cheap accommodation in Koh Yao Noi!
  • Koh Yao Seaview Bungalow: Located by the sea, 15 min by song taew from the port. Very spacious bungalow with double bed and private terrace overlooking the swimming pool or the sea, from 45€ per night. Most: the beach next door, the calm, the swimming pool, the restaurant really cheap, hearty and delicious. It is our favorite for its price/performance ratio!
  • Paradise KohYao: Located in the North of the island. Tastefully decorated room with bathroom open to the outside and private terrace from €95, breakfast included. Most: the idyllic setting, the infinity pool, the private beach, the location in the bay.
  • Cape Kudu Hotel, Koh Yao Noi: Located in the southeast of the island. Spacious and bright double room with very neat decoration, from €150 per night, breakfast included. Most: the design, the calm, the dream setting, the welcoming staff. A very nice hotel in Koh Yao Noi, ideal for a romantic getaway!
  • Laguna Villas Yao Noi: Located in the southeast of the island, right by the beach. Pretty fully equipped villas, perfect mix between modern and traditional Thai style from 200€ per night, breakfast included. Most: the location facing the sea, the large swimming pool, close to excellent restaurants.
  • Six Senses Yao Noi: This is the most luxurious hotel on the whole island. It offers splendid villas with private pools and even a butler who will be assigned to you for the entire duration of your stay. From €570, breakfast included. The pluses: the Spa, the gym, the private beach, the comfort, the excellent meals, the exceptional service. This is clearly the finest luxury hotel on Koh Yao Noi. A dream place to spend your honeymoon or a romantic getaway!

Leaving for 2 weeks in Thailand: another itinerary idea

If you want to visit Thailand in 2 weeks but spend a little less time in the South (do 1 single island instead of 2), there is another variant to this itinerary.

You can follow the steps until the last day in Chiang Mai.

From there, I recommend you to reach the other famous city in the North: Chiang RaiBy spending 2 or 3 days there, you will have time to visit the majority of the must-sees, including the emblematic monument, the White Temple.

If you choose this option, do not hesitate to read my article: Visiting Chiang Rai. You will find all my advice to organize your days well and not miss anything.

After Chiang Rai, all you have to do is take the plane to continue and end your two-week stay in Phuket or Krabi.
