4 Weeks in Thailand: Ultimate 4-Week Itinerary

A month in Thailand: what to do and see?

Are you going to visit Thailand in a month?

Excellent choice!

To help you prepare for your stay, I have concocted a one-month itinerary for you in Thailand so that you don’t miss any of the most beautiful places. And yes, you will discover the majority of the country’s unmissable places of interest!

For this trip I take you to discover BangkokAyutthaya, Sukhothai, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.

For the second part of your vacation in Thailand, head to the southern islands with a circuit passing through PhuketKoh LantaKrabi and Koh Yao Noi.

And as usual, for each stage, I give you my selection of the best accommodations.

So, what to do and see in Thailand in 1 month?

Day 1-3: Bangkok

For this 1-month Thailand itinerary, I suggest you start with Bangkok, the country’s capital.

Arrived at Suvarnabhumi airport,  you have 2 solutions to reach your hotel:

  • The Airport Rail Link which connects the airport to the city center for only 45 Bahts and which allows you to avoid all traffic jams. Departure every 15 minutes between 6 a.m. and midnight. Super convenient, it is also connected to the underground metro (MRT) and the aerial metro (BTS), to be able to easily reach the majority of hotels (you may have to end up with a taxi ride if you are staying in the historic center) . This is the fastest and cheapest solution.
  • The taxi: price between 250 and 450 Bahts depending on your destination and especially the state of traffic. Ask the driver to switch on the meter and never accept a fixed price. I also advise you to show him the address of your hotel in Thai to avoid mistakes.
  • Book a private transfer by clicking directly here! From 1070 baht (30€ for 2).

Spend a quiet end of the day and a first night in Bangkok to recover from jet lag.

Here are the visits to do for the first full day in Bangkok:

  • The Grand Palace: former residence of monarchs – 500 Bahts
  • Wat Pho and its famous reclining Buddha – 200 Bahts
  • Wat Arun entirely covered with mosaics – 50 Bahts
  • The Siam Museum (300 Bahts) or the National Museum of Bangkok (200 Bahts), both on the history of Thailand but in a more playful and less classic version for the 1st.
  • Khao San Road for its shops, atmosphere and bars.

And nothing better than to conclude this day with a cruise and a dinner on the river to contemplate the most famous monuments of Bangkok illuminated.

Tips for your Thailand itinerary:

As there aren’t really any explanatory signs to visit Bangkok’s 3 main tourist attractions (Grand Palace + Wat Pho + Wat Arun), it is possible to discover them during a guided tour. You can book it directly by clicking here.

4 weeks Thailand itinerary
The Grand Palace in Bangkok

On the program for the second day in Bangkok:

  • Wat Saket for its panoramic terrace – 50 Bahts
  • Chinatown and Wat Traimit for its 5.5 ton golden Buddha statue
  • Lumphini Park for a quiet moment without the crowds
  • The Siam district and its huge, ultra-modern shopping centers
  • The Bayoke tower to do at the end of the day to admire Bangkok by night. Access tickets to the viewing platform can be booked here.
  • Or the King Power Mahanakhon  which is currently  the highest observation platform  in Thailand. Tickets are on sale here!
  • Sports enthusiasts may prefer to watch a muay thai boxing match, the national sport. Tickets on sale right there.

For the last day in Bangkok, if it falls on the weekend, I recommend that you take a trip to the Chatuchak market. The largest market in Thailand is home to no less than 15,000 diverse and varied stalls: clothing, jewelry, souvenirs. And of course, there are also plenty of food stalls!

If you rather want to visit the surroundings of Bangkok, you can choose a day trip. There are 2 very popular ones:

You will find all the details for visiting Bangkok and its surroundings in our detailed article: What to do in Bangkok for 3 days?

Tips for your Thailand itinerary:

For the new stage of this 1-month Thailand itinerary, I suggest you go a little north : towards Sukhothai, 350 km from Ayutthaya.

In view of the distance, the best is to count a day just for the route:

  • By car, allow about 5 hours on roads in excellent condition, lined with many brand new gas stations
  • By Bus: Meet at Ayutthaya Bus Station and off you go for a 6-hour journey. There are several departures during the day. Price: 300 Baht.
  • By train: Sukhothai does not have a train station, you will need to take the train to Phitsalunok (4h / 700 Baht) + 1 bus from Phitsalunok to Sukhothai (1h / 50 Baht).

The next day, you will have the opportunity to have a full day to discover the historical park of Sukhothai. With Ayutthaya, these are the 2 must-see parks. Sukhothai is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 7-10: Chiang Mai

For the fourth leg of this month-long trip to Thailand, we continue even further north and go back 300 km to Chiang Mai.

Here are the travel times according to your means of transport:

  • 4h30 of road by car, once again the roads are excellent and the journey all in a straight line. No stress!
  • 6 hours by bus (departure from Sukhothai bus station) – 300 Bahts
  • By train: from Sukhothai, you will first need to go to Phitsalunok by bus (1h / 50 Bahts) then take the train: 6 to 8 hours between 100 to 600 Bahts (different classes).

Here too, you can count on a good day’s journey, but if you feel like it, you can take a short walk at the end of the day for a first glimpse of the city.

The second day, we begin the real discovery of Chiang Mai, renowned for its many temples. And that’s good, the majority are concentrated in the old town, the ideal opportunity for a walk not to be missed:

  • Wat Phra Singh. Free.
  • Wat Chedi Luang – 40 baht.
  • Wat Inthakhin Sadue Muang. Free.
  • The Monument to the 3 Kings
  • One of the 3 museums on the history of the city : the cultural center, the history center and the Lanna folk art museum.
  • And Wat Chiang Man
  • Warorot market
  • Wat Saen Fang, Wat Buppharam and Wat Mahawan.  Only the Buppharam temple is paying: 20 Bahts.

From 6/7 p.m. head either to the Night Bazaar (weekdays) or to the Saturday or Sunday market. Typical of many Thai towns, you’ll find lots of souvenirs and lots of food stalls where you can sample the excellent traditional cuisine.

Return to spend a second night at your hotel in Chiang Mai.

4 weeks in Thailand
Wat Chiang Man, in the old town of Chiang Mai

On the third day in Chiang Mai, head to Doi Suthep National Park, a great classic to do around the northern capital.

The best is to take your car or rent a scooter to go there and be independent in your day. Otherwise, you can also take one of the collective taxis (song taew) leaving from the old town. However, you will have to wait for it to be filled before you can leave.

Last choice: go on an organized excursion with a guide. Convenient because you have nothing to manage and we pick you up in front of your hotel.

Here is the list of must-see places in the park:

  • Huay Kaew Waterfall: Entrance Level – Free
  • Mon Tha Than waterfall – 100 Bahts + 30 Bahts for the car
  • The temple of Doi Suthep and its panorama over the whole province – 30 Bahts
  • The gardens of Bhubing Palace for a walk around the place of residence of the royal family during the winter – 50 Bahts
  • The Hmong village located at the end of the park road. With lots of souvenir stalls and a landscaped garden with a waterfall – 10 Bahts
Thailand itinerary 4 weeks
Doi Suthep National Park, Thailand

The last day in Chiang Mai, I leave you the choice between 2 typical activities of a stay of about thirty days in Thailand:

  • Spend a day in contact with elephants in a refuge to feed and wash them. Better to book in advance, there are only a small number of visitors allowed per day so as not to disturb them.
  • Take a Thai cooking class with the program of buying ingredients at the market, making delicious recipes and of course a tasting!

If you have a car, I recommend spending the late afternoon at Huay Tung Tao Lake, about 15 minutes from downtown. It is very popular with locals who love to come and eat there on stilt huts at the edge of the water.

There is also a large area set up with giant straw animals for the souvenir photo.

Access to the lake costs 50 Bahts per person.

Spend one last night in Chiang Mai.

Koh Phi Phi

Day 18-21: Koh Lanta

Continuation of this recommended route of about thirty days in Thailand by an island just as famous but a little less touristy than Phuket: Koh Lanta.

To get there, you have to take a first boat from the port of Rassada in Phuket to Koh Phi Phi (2h30) and from there change to another boat to Koh Lanta (1h15). The rates displayed on the internet are around 1000 Bahts but by going through our hotel which called the company directly, we were able to get our tickets for 700 Bahts for 2 with transfer included at the port.

If you prefer  to take a single boat,  it is also possible to make the  trip by speedboat  but there are not a lot of places. For this transfer, it is therefore better to book well in advance.

In the afternoon, enjoy one of the many beaches on the island of Koh Lanta which are located on the west coast. The further south you go, the fewer people there will be.

Spend a first night in Koh Lanta.

For the program of the next 3 days, I advise you:

  • To make the excursion of the 4 islands to go to Koh Chuek, Koh Waen, Koh Muk and Koh Ngai. Fully relaxing schedule with swimming and snorkeling.
Thailand itinerary 4 weeks
Excursion des 4 iles, Koh Lanta
  • Take advantage of the activities planned on the island: kayaking in the mangroves, diving, cooking classes, visiting caves…

My detailed explanation of things to do in Koh Lanta can be found here: What to do in Koh Lanta?

Tips for your Thailand itinerary:

During your stay in Koh Lanta, I advise you to eat at least once at the Sai Nat restaurant, at road level, towards Klong Toab Beach. All the dishes, both Indian and Thai, are delicious and very generous.

Go around Koh Lanta

Day 22-25: Krabi

Another stop on this 4-week Thailand itinerary: Krabi.

Same thing as for the previous stages, you will have to take the boat to go to Krabi from Koh Lanta: about 350 Bahts per person for 2h30 crossing.

In Krabi I advise you to stay near Ao Nang, the main seaside resort of the province. This will allow you to spend the afternoon of this first day on the beach of Ao Nang or that of Nopparat Thara, not far from there.

For the other 2 days in Krabi, I recommend:

  • To spend a day on the Railay peninsula accessible only by boat from Ao Nang beach: 10 minutes for 200 Bahts. On Railay you can enjoy the 2 beautiful beaches of Railay West beach and Phra Nang Beach. Those who want to do a little sport will have the choice between kayaking, paddle and climbing. Railay being a world famous destination for practicing this sport. Beginners can even book a lesson directly here!

Day 26-28: Koh Yao Noi

Last stage of this 1-month Thailand itinerary, I suggest you end your vacation on a small island that does not yet know mass tourism: Koh Yao Noi.

Super convenient, it is only 30 minutes by boat from Krabi (300 Baht trip).

On the program for these 3 days on Koh Yao Noi:

  • Enjoy the beaches and walk around. You can rent a scooter to go around the island.
  • The 4 islands boat tour which is the best I have done during my whole month road trip itinerary in Thailand! The price is 2500 Bahts for the boat (to be divided between the number of passengers).
  • The excursion in Phang Nga Bay with discovery of James Bond Island and Koh Panyee for 4500 Bahts per boat (here also to be divided between passengers).

All the things to do in Koh Yao Noi are in our article: Visit Koh Yao Noi.

And now your one-month vacation in Thailand is coming to an end! From Koh Yao Noi, you can either fly back to Krabi or Phuket to get to the airport and catch your return flight.

Accommodation in Koh Yao Noi

  • Tha Khao Bay View: Located on the east of the island. Simple bungalow with fan from 25€ per night. Most: the incredible view of the sea, the location in the middle of nature, the kindness of the owners. An excellent choice for cheap accommodation in Koh Yao Noi!
  • Koh Yao Seaview Bungalow: Located by the sea, 15 min by song taew from the port. Very spacious bungalow with double bed and private terrace overlooking the swimming pool or the sea, from 45€ per night. Most: the beach next door, the calm, the swimming pool, the restaurant really cheap, hearty and delicious. It is our favorite for its price/performance ratio!
  • Paradise KohYao: Located in the North of the island. Tastefully decorated room with bathroom open to the outside and private terrace from €95, breakfast included. Most: the idyllic setting, the infinity pool, the private beach, the location in the bay.
  • Cape Kudu Hotel, Koh Yao Noi: Located in the southeast of the island. Spacious and bright double room with very neat decoration, from €150 per night, breakfast included. Most: the design, the calm, the dream setting, the welcoming staff. A very nice hotel in Koh Yao Noi, ideal for a romantic getaway!
  • Laguna Villas Yao Noi: Located in the southeast of the island, right by the beach. Pretty fully equipped villas, perfect mix between modern and traditional Thai style from 200€ per night, breakfast included. Most: the location facing the sea, the large swimming pool, close to excellent restaurants.
  • Six Senses Yao Noi: This is the most luxurious hotel on the whole island. It offers splendid villas with private pools and even a butler who will be assigned to you for the entire duration of your stay. From €570, breakfast included. The pluses: the Spa, the gym, the private beach, the comfort, the excellent meals, the exceptional service. This is clearly the finest luxury hotel on Koh Yao Noi. A dream place to spend your honeymoon or a romantic getaway!

  1. Hi! I got flights arriving and leaving Thailand from Bangkok and I’m spending 4 weeks there. I’m wondering if that was a mistake and should change the flights in order to leave from Phuket. Any advise on that, please? Many thanks.
