So, in which neighborhood to stay in Madrid?
In the Los Austrias neighborhood
Los Austrias is the old Madrid, historical district of the Habsburg dynasty. Organized around the Plaza Mayor, one of the emblems of Madrid, it stretches from Puerta del Sol to Calle Mayor.
With many Baroque churches, its old palaces and monasteries dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, and classical and traditional architecture, this district is not lacking in charm: it is also one of the most touristic in the city..
I recommend this area for accommodation in Madrid :
- If you are passionate about classical architecture
- If you like history
- For a true return to the past
The district is the ideal place to discover :
- The Plaza Mayor and the place de la Villa
- The Palacio Real, official residence of the King of Spain, and the Palace of Santa Cruz (headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs)
- The Almudena Cathedral, the most important in the region and the first church in Spain to be consecrated by the Pope, and the Collegiate Church of San Isidro (which was the Cathedral of Madrid until 1993)
- The Descalzas Reales Monastery, now a convent of nuns
- The royal theater
