Beautiful garden created by the painter Jacques Majorelle who lived in Marrakech, the Majorelle garden is a colorful place, full of freshness and very pleasant to visit in a city as hot as Marrakech.
First, the visit of the Majorelle garden in Marrakech
A little history
Lovers of Marrakech, the French designer Yves-Saint Laurent bought it in 1980. And he saved the clutches of real estate developers, the garden next to his house. This garden created for over 40 years by the artist Jacques Majorelle, in a bright blue tone, which at the time shocked many people, has since been restored. Although we have already traveled a lot in Morocco , it remains one of our favorite places.
On a surface of approximately 1/2 hectare, the Majorelle garden exudes a calm and peaceful atmosphere. With its shady paths, exotic plants and pools of water lilies and lotus, the ballad is magical.
The route in the garden
A predefined route allows you to walk between trees and exotic plants. The painter’s studio villa turned into a museum, the ponds and fountains of the garden. All dominated by the famous “Majorelle blue” pots, fountains and different buildings. Including the Yves-Saint Laurent memorial. This memorial is composed of a Roman column, found on the beach of Tangier. Placed on a red Marrakech base, a plaque bearing the name of Yves Saint Laurent and two white marble benches.
The route also allows you to contemplate palms, bamboos and many cactus some imported from the Southwest of the United States. The highlight of the show, in my opinion, is the Majorelle blue square fountain. The contrast of colors and plants is beautiful. Its central location makes it the main element of this garden.
At the heart of the garden is also the Berber museum. This museum presents exclusively a collection of Berber objects that come from various regions of Morocco, from the Rif to the Sahara. Maps, explanatory texts – in French, English and Arabic – photographs, archival films and audio-visual documents accompany the visitors throughout the course.
Then, practical information
Located in the Guéliz district (Rue Yves Saint Laurent), the Majorelle Garden is easily accessible from the center of Marrakech. Count between 30 and 40 dirhams (about 3 euros) to get there by taxi from the Medina or 30 cents by taking bus 15 from Koutoubia.
The garden is open from October 1st to April 30th from 8am to 5.30pm. From May 1st to September 30th from 8am to 6pm. Finally, during the month of Ramadan from 9h to 17h. The entrance costs 50 dirhams per person (supplement of 25 Dirhams if you want to visit also the Berber museum). The garden and the museum are free for children under 9 accompanied. Finally, my opinion on the Majorelle garden
To conclude, the walk in the Majorelle garden is very pleasant. Plants and ponds are well maintained. The atmosphere that emerges is both calm and relaxing . The mixture of colors is harmonious and photogenic. The price of the entrance ticket is quite expensive compared to the other places we visited in Marrakech . In addition, the garden itself is not very big. I advise you to go early to avoid the crowd (600 000 visitors per year!). And especially to take your time in the garden by asking you on the many benches and enjoying the setting and calm.
