Itinerary: 3 weeks in Sardinia – What to do and see?

Do you want to visit Sardinia in three weeks? Excellent choice of sunny destination!

In order to help you plan your road trip, I have prepared a 3-week Sardinia itinerary to take you around this magnificent Italian island.

Leaving from Cagliari, thanks to our guide, discover Sant’Antioco, Alghero, the island of Asinara, the islands of Maddalena, the Costa Smeralda, the Gulf of Orosei and many more. By following this program, you are sure not to miss any of the must-see places in Sardinia.

So what to do and see in Sardinia in three weeks?

Day 1: Cagliari

For this 3-week Sardinia itinerary, you will arrive at Cagliari airport, in the south of the island.

To go around Sardinia in 3 weeks, you will need to rent a car. This is the only solution if you want to see all the most beautiful places!

Once you have collected your car, your Sardinia itinerary can finally begin! Head to Cagliari city center to drop off your luggage and then set off to explore the city.

Depending on the arrival time of your flight, here is a list of places of interest not to be missed in Cagliari, Sardinia:

• The Castello district, the historic district with the majority of monuments
• The Bastion Saint-Remy and the Umberto I terrace to enjoy a panorama of the whole city
• The Cathedral of Santa Maria
• The palazzo di Città, small museum of Sardinian paintings and textiles
• The National Archaeological Museum of Cagliari to soak up the history of Sardinia
• Poetto beach, the largest in Cagliari, easily accessible by bus or car for the first swim of the holidays!

Spend the night in Cagliari.

Accommodation in Cagliari

Day 2: Teulada

The next day, get down to business for this 3-week Sardinia itinerary and start by following the south coast of the island from Cagliari.

During this stage, I suggest you take one of the most beautiful panoramic roads in Sardinia : the SP 71 or Strada Panoramica della Costa del Sud. It starts from Chia (about 1 hour from Cagliari) and runs along the seaside to Teulada, nearly 25 km.

Throughout the day, you can admire splendid viewpoints and swim in sublime coves when you wish. My favorite of the trip is undoubtedly the Cala Cipolla with its shallow translucent water and its dream setting! You must leave your car in the paid parking lot and reach it in 5 minutes on foot.

You can also take the walk a little further after the beach to the Capo Spartivento lighthouse and contemplate the panorama of the entire coast.

Spend the night in Teulada.

• B&B Su Tostainu: Located in Teulada. Spacious and clean double room from €60 per night, breakfast included. Most: the very nice host, the good breakfast.
• Hotel Jasmine: Located 600 m from the town center of Teulada. Spacious double room with balcony from €70 per night, breakfast included. Most: the friendly welcome, good quality bedding, the price / performance ratio.
• Agriturismo S’Arxola: Located in Teulada. Comfortable double room from €95 per night, breakfast included. Most: the setting in the countryside and near the sea, the excellent homemade and typical breakfast, the friendliness of the owner and his advice.

Day 3: Island of Sant’Antioco

For the next leg of this 3-week Sardinia tour, reach the island of Sant’Antioco, just 40 minutes by car from Teulada.

Crossing the bridge that connects it to the “mainland”, you will arrive in the main town of the island, also called Sant’Antioco. I advise you to park your car directly at the entrance to the city, near the port and the tourist office.

Then stroll along the seaside and then go up a little in the city to admire the Basilica di Sant’Antioco or visit the archaeological museum.

Then get back in the car to go around the island and the beaches. Not to be missed in particular: the beach of Maladroxia, that of Coa Quaddus, Cala Sapone and Cala Lunga.

If you only have to choose one to swim in, I recommend this one. Shallow and transparent water, fine sand, framed by 2 cliffs, it is the wildest and for me the most beautiful beach of Sant’Antioco.

Spend a night on Sant’Antioco.

Accommodation in Sant’Antioco

• B&B LA VELA: Located in the town of Sant’Antioco. Double room with a sea view balcony from €60 per night, breakfast included. Most: the calm, the view, the very nice owner.
• Complesso Residenziale Isola dei Mori: Located 10 minutes walk from Cala Sapone. Fully equipped studio with kitchenette from €85 per night. Most: being able to eat, calm, proximity to the beach.
• Mercury Boutique Hotel: Located between Cala Sapone and Cala Lunga. Spacious, bright double room with sea view balcony from €100 per night. The pluses: the 2 swimming pools, the ultra-rich buffet breakfast, the environment and the view. It is undoubtedly the most beautiful hotel on the island of Sant’Antioco!

Day 4: Iglesiente Coast

Today, to continue your 3-week road Sardinia itinerary, I suggest you discover the coast of Iglesiente, a former mining region.

Stops to make on the road:

• Fontana Mare beach for its view of the surrounding mountains, simply magnificent.
• Nebida and Masua to observe the famous Pan di Zuchero, nothing less than the highest faraglioni in Sardinia.
• The Porto Flavia mine dug into the cliff over nearly 600 meters. It is the best known mine in the region. Visits are organized but you will have to book them by going to the tourist office of Iglesias or on the internet.
• La Cala Domestica, the ideal place to swim on the coast and spend part of the afternoon. One of the places to see absolutely during your tour of Sardinia by car!

For this night, I advise you to stay around Portixeddu, towards Fluminimaggiore or Buggerru.

Accommodation on the Iglesiente Coast

• B&B Raggio di Sole: Located in Fluminimaggiore. Bright and comfortable double room from €60 per night, breakfast included. Most: the relaxing place, the great welcome, the sublime view. It is our favorite for its performance / price ratio on the Iglesiente coast.
• Agriturismo Fighezia:  Located in Fluminimaggiore. Double room with mountain and sea view from €85 per night, breakfast included. Most: the view from the rooms, the absolute calm, the quality of the table d’hôtes.
• La Rosa Dei Venti: Located in Buggerru. Very spacious and welcoming double room from €115 per night, breakfast included. Most: the breakfast on the roof terrace with the view, the calm, the welcome.

Day 5-6: Oristano

Today’s stage of your tour of Sardinia takes you to Oristano.

In the morning, reach the Spiaggia di Piscinas, which can be reached in around 1 hour from Fluminimaggiore. The last part of the road is a track so you will have to drive quite slowly.

With its huge sandy beach bordered by dunes and pine forest, the Spiaggia di Piscinas is one of the most famous in Sardinia. But, given its length, don’t worry about finding a quiet place! At lunchtime, you can have a bite to eat in one of the snack bars at the entrance to the beach.

From the Spiaggia, then count 1h30 by car to go to Oristano.

You can spend the late afternoon strolling through the historic center to see  the traditional piazza del Duomo and its cathedral, the Chiesa di San Francesco, piazza Eleonara d’Arborea and piazza Roma. It’s rather pleasant and you can choose a good restaurant for the evening.

Spend the night in Oristano.

The next day, this three-week stay in Sardinia continues with the discovery of the Sinis Peninsula, west of Oristano.

Here you can visit one of the main tourist and archaeological sites in Sardinia: the site of Tharros. A former Phoenician trading post and then a center of commercial exchange, only a few ruins remain today. Count 5€ to enter.

At the exit of the site, you can take the path on the left and take a very nice walk along the peninsula towards Capo San Marco. On the way back, climb the small hill of the Tour di San Giovanni. The views are definitely worth the detour!

You can even go down to swim in very beautiful creeks. Ideal for spending an afternoon at the beach without too many people and in an idyllic setting.

Return to spend a second night in Oristano.

Tips for your Sardinia itinerary:
Do not leave Oristano without having tasted an ice cream from Barbagelato on Piazza Roma. They are the best I have eaten in Sardinia!

Accommodation in Oristano

• Sa Domu e Crakeras: Located in the center of Oristano. Fairly basic but very clean double room from €45 per night, breakfast included. The pluses: the free private parking, the excellent welcome and in French!
• Hotel Il Duomo: Located in the heart of the historic center of Oristano. This hotel located in an old mansion offers spacious, pleasant rooms in a very classy setting. From 80€ per night, breakfast included. Most: the location in the center, the calm, the layout of the common areas and especially the very varied and super well presented breakfast. It is our favorite for its performance / price ratio!
• Hotel Raffael: Located on the Sinis peninsula, in Putzu Idu, 5 minutes walk from the beach. The establishment offers spacious, bright double rooms, most of which have a large private terrace with table and armchairs and a view of the garden. From €140 per night, breakfast included. Most: the calm, the large garden with swimming pool, the terrace, the super very hearty breakfast, the very welcoming staff. This is our recommendation for a romantic stay around Oristano.

Day 7-9: Alghero

Continue your 3-week holiday in Sardinia by heading to Bosa, about an hour’s drive from Oristano, on the road to Alghero.

With its castle perched on the hill and its colorful houses along the river, Bosa is a must on the island!

Places to see in Bosa:

• The Old Bridge
• The Corso Vittorio Emanuel, where the shops and cafés are concentrated
• The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception
• The Casa Deriu museum and its collection of embroidery and lace, typical art of Bosa
• The castle of Serravalle or Malaspina : I advise you to walk there from the old town to admire the panorama.

Between Bosa and Alghero, you can stop for a sunbathing break on one of the many beaches. The beaches of Compultittu or S’Abba Drucche are the most beautiful.

Then join your accommodation in Alghero.

The next day, I suggest you visit the historic center of Alghero. Very beautiful medieval village by the sea, you can stroll through the cobbled streets to discover the cathedral of Santa Maria or the 2 churches of Saint-Michel and Sainte-Barbe. 

You can also admire (and why not buy) magnificent red coral jewelry, the specialty of this region of Sardinia. And if you are interested, you can also visit the museum dedicated to coral.

Continue the walk along the lungomare leading to the beach of Lido San Giovanni where you can swim.

For the end of the day and the sunset, go to the ramparts of Alghero.

Spend a second night in town.

Third and last day in Alghero, go on an excursion to the Caves of Neptune. Visiting Sardinia in 3 weeks also means discovering popular sites and the caves are definitely one of them!

Boats take you there every day from the port (15€ + entrance to the caves) but I advise you to go there by car, which is easier for the program of the day. 35 minutes drive.

You will then have to descend the 654 steps of a staircase dug directly into the rock to reach the entrance. You will see, it is impressive!

The Neptune Caves can be visited every day. Departure every hour (9am, 10am 11am etc.) with the obligation to be accompanied by a guide. Calculate your schedule so you don’t have to wait for the next visit!

You will then have to go back up the stairs!

In the afternoon, I recommend that you do some hiking, the surroundings of the caves lend themselves perfectly with many marked trails. You can discover the Capo Caccia and the natural park of Porto Conte.

End the day with a good swim on the fairly wild beach of Porto Ferro, the most beautiful in the area!

Go back to sleep in Alghero.

Day 10-11: Stintino

Today’s program is very simple and not too busy for this stage of your three-week Sardinia itinerary: reach La Pelosa beach to spend the day there.

From Alghero, only 1 hour drive separates you from the beach known to be the most beautiful in Sardinia and cited in all tourist guides. You have already seen photos or postcards, it’s a must!

On the other hand, who says known says world. So plan to arrive there in the early morning to find a parking space and a place to lay your towel.

From June 1 to September 30, access to the beach is strictly regulated. You must book your entrance ticket (3.50€ per person / free for under 12s) in advance on this official website: La Pelosa Stintino.

To settle on the sand, plan a mat to put between the ground and your towel (it’s obligatory and the rangers watch). Otherwise you can also rent deckchairs and parasols to be comfortably installed.

Enjoy the turquoise water of this little corner of paradise!

Spend the night in the vicinity of Stintino.

The next day, I recommend visiting the island of Asinara, this protected natural area where the famous albino donkeys of Sardinia live.

Accessible only by boat, departure is every morning around 9am from the port of Stintino. It is best to book your excursion to the Asinara one day in advance (before or after the Pelosa for example).

The island can only be visited by small train, 4*4 with guide or by bicycle. You can see an old prison there , have a picnic by the sea and observe the fauna and flora. You can also swim on certain beaches (but not everywhere, some of them are protected and therefore prohibited).

Take the boat back to spend a second night in Stintino.

Accommodation in Stintino

• Hotel Silvestrino: Located 5 minutes by car from La Pelosa. Spacious and bright double room from €90 per night, breakfast included. Most: the calm, the excellent location, the smiling staff, the restaurant and its good Sardinian cuisine.
• Park Hotel Asinara: Located 10 minutes walk from the center of Stintino. Double room with terrace overlooking the garden and the sea from €100 per night, breakfast included. The pluses: the excellent breakfast taken on the terrace with sea view, the free shuttle to La Pelosa, the welcoming staff. It is our favorite for its performance / price ratio in Stintino.

Day 12: Capo Testa / Santa Teresa di Gallura

Resuming your 21-day Sardinia itinerary, visiting Castelsardo, an hour’s drive away.

Just like Alghero and Bosa, it is a pretty medieval village in which to stroll to discover the churches, the cathedral and the castle. You will also find souvenir shops selling woven baskets, basketry being a typical art of Castelsardo.

Leaving Castelsardo, be sure to pass in front of the rock of the elephant, very famous in Sardinia, for the souvenir photo.

Then join the Capo Testa, 1h20 drive to see this old granite quarry with its huge rocks with improbable shapes located by the sea. The walk is really beautiful and you can even do a little hiking in the surroundings.

And then, you can rest quietly on the Spiaggia Zia Culumba, a magnificent beach with large rocks and translucent water.

Capo Testa and its surroundings were one of my favorite places during my three week tour in Sardinia!

Sleep in Santa Teresa di Gallura, a charming little town with its central square full of cafes and restaurants.

Accommodation around Capo Testa / Santa Teresa di Gallura

• La Reggia Di Nausicaa: Located 10 minutes walk from the port of Santa Teresa. Apartment with 1 bedroom and kitchenette from €55 per night. Most: the swimming pool and the warm welcome.
• Villa Gandamar: Located 2 km from the city center. Large and comfortable double room from €80 per night, breakfast included. Most: the great breakfast, the pleasant setting, the calm. It is our favorite for its performance / price ratio.
• Hotel Corallaro: Located in the historic center of Santa Teresa, 2 minutes from the beach. Double room decorated in the marine style but very modern from 140€ per night, breakfast included. Most: the swimming pool, the proximity to the beach, the very helpful and efficient staff. This is our recommendation for a romantic Sardinia itinerary!

Day 13-14: Maddalena Archipelago

For this new stage of your 3-week stay in Sardinia, I suggest you spend 2 days on the Maddalena archipelago.

Boarding for the islands (accessible only by boat) is in Palau, 35 minutes from Santa Teresa.

Practical information: departure every 1/2 hour, crossing 20 minutes, price of 40€ for 2 and a return car. You will disembark on the island and town of the same name: La Maddalena.

Dedicate your day to visiting the island by taking the panoramic route and stopping to swim at the beaches of Bassa Trinita, Monti d’Arena or Spalmatore.

Finish off in style with Capoccia du Purpu beach, the most beautiful in La Maddalena.

Spend the night at the Maddalena.

The next day, set off to explore the little sister and neighbor of La Maddelana, the island of La Caprera, just 5 minutes away by car. Wilder and more authentic, most of the beaches and coves are only accessible after a short hike.

I recommend Cala Serena, Caprarese, Coticcio and Brigantina.

Do not forget to pass by the 2 places offering magnificent panoramas on the archipelago: the belvedere of the Teialone tower and the fortification di Poggio Rasu.

Go back to stay in the Maddalena.

Accommodation on the Island of Maddalena

• Residenza Marginetto: Located just 1 minute walk from the beach and in the very north of the island. Holiday home with kitchen, lounge area, patio, barbecue from €110 per night. Most: the situation at the end of the island and therefore the calm, the magnificent environment, the direct access to the beach. It is a big favorite for its location, ideal for a relaxing holiday! 
• Grand Hotel Ma&Ma Resort: Located 100 meters from Punta Tegge beach. This luxury hotel, the only 5* on the island, offers superb very well decorated double rooms from €250 per night, breakfast included. Most: the swimming pool, the Spa, the attentive staff, close to the beach. This is our recommendation for a luxury stay in the Maddalena Archipelago.

Day 15: Costa Smeralda / Porto Cervo

Visiting Sardinia in 3 weeks by car also means discovering the most exclusive part of the island: the Costa Smeralda.

To get there you just have to take the ferry in the opposite direction, and disembarking in Palau to follow the coast down to the south.

Here yachts, marina, villas and luxury hotels, high-end boutiques are on the program. The Costa Smeralda welcomes the jet set from all over the world every summer. Do not miss to pass by Porto Cervo, the capital of the Emerald Coast.

Not far from there are some of the prettiest beaches in Sardinia: the beach of Liscia Ruja, Caprioccioli, Romazzino or the beach of the Principe.

Spend a night on the Costa Smeralda.

It is located south of the Costa Smeralda

• Residenza Capriccioli: Located just 3 minutes walk from the beach of the same name and 8 km from Porto Cervo. Studio and apartment with kitchenette and balcony or terrace from €100 per night. For the Costa Smeralda, this is one of the cheapest accommodations you can find so book in advance! Most: access to the beach on foot, swimming pools, geographical location.
• Grand Hotel Poltu Quatu : Located in Poltu Qautu and 12 minutes walk from the beach. Very spacious and bright double room, with typical Sardinian furniture from €190 per night, breakfast included. Most: the location, the excellent breakfast, the pleasant staff. It is one of the best choices for accommodation on the Costa Smeralda, the price/performance ratio is exceptional!
  
• Cervo Hotel, Costa Smeralda Resort : Located in Porto Cervo, 15 minutes walk from the beach. This 5* establishment offers warm and comfortable double rooms from €280 per night, breakfast included. Most: the exceptional setting, the availability of staff, the calm, the decor of the hotel. This is our recommendation for a romantic trip to the Costa Smeralda.
• Cala Di Volpe, a Luxury Collection Hotel: Located in green surroundings, just 6 minutes walk from the beach. This luxury hotel offers superb double rooms with a view of the gardens or the bay of Cala di Volpe, from €400 per night, breakfast included. Most: the services of a top-of-the-range hotel, the private beach, the magnificent setting, the friendliness of the staff. This is our recommendation for a luxury stay in Sardinia!

Day 16-18: Gulf of Orosei

Continue your 20-21 day Sardinia itinerary by descending a little further towards the center of the island.

To change the beaches a bit, I suggest you spend 3 days visiting the Gulf of Orosei and Supramonte, an unforgettable stop on your tour of Sardinia.

On the program for the 1st day, reach Nuoro and Monte Ortobene, 1h40 from Porto Cervo. Drive up to the Belvedere of Monte Ortobene to admire the view of the mountains and the valley. You will also find the Sardinian version of Christ the Redeemer!

Then set off to discover Orgosolo, the most famous mountain village in Sardinia thanks to its hundreds of Murales, frescoes painted on the walls of houses. Most are visible along Corso Repubblica and if you want to know more about their meaning, you can hire an audio guide with a map for €5.

Then join Cala Gonone by taking a mountain road with very beautiful viewpoints.

When you arrive, head to the port to book your boat trip to the Gulf of Orosei for the next day to be sure you have a place. It’s a must do during this 3-week Sardinia itinerary!

Choose from the different excursions:

• By sailboat  for 90€ per person
• In a zodiac with driver  from €40 per person
• By renting a zodiac,  which you can drive yourself without a boating licence, from €120 (for the whole group)

For the end of the day, if you want to swim, I recommend Cala Fuili, 10 minutes by car from Cala Gonone.

Spend a night in Cala Gonone.

The next day, set off by boat to discover all the coves of the Gulf of Orosei:

• Moon Cove
• Sisine Cove
• Biriola cove
• Mariolu Cove
• Cala Gabbiani
• The Goloritzé Cove

These coves are for me the most beautiful in Sardinia!

Spend a second night in Cala Gonone.

For the last day in the Gulf of Orosei, go on a great hike in the Supramonte, to the gorges of Su Gorropu. This is the hike not to be missed in Sardinia.

There are 2 paths to reach the entrance to the Gorges: one that starts from the Silana hotel, the other from the Barva bridge. In any case, count between 4 to 5 hours of walking. Arrived at the end of the path, you will have to pay 5€ to access the gorges and walk in them. Bring good shoes and plenty of water.

Jeeps also offer their outward and return service for €15 per person per trip. This allows you to walk less, but they don’t go all the way.

Go back to stay in Cala Gonone.

Accommodation around the Gulf of Orosei

• Hotel Bue Marino: Located just in front of the port of Cala Gonone, super convenient for the boat trip. Spacious and bright double room with sea or garden view from €65 per night, breakfast at €10. Most: the situation to take the boat, the terrace on the roof with jacuzzi, the good breakfast.
• Hotel la Playa: Located 5 minutes walk from the port and the beach of Cala Gonone. Pleasant and comfortable double room from €80 per night, breakfast included. Most: the very friendly staff, the hearty breakfast, the swimming pool.
• Cala Luna: Located by the sea, 1 minute walk from the beach. Modern and bright double room from €100 per night, breakfast included. Most: the pleasant setting, the magnificent view from the terrace, the warm welcome. It is our favorite for its performance / price ratio in Cala Gonone!

Day 19-20: Arbatax

Continue your three-week journey in Sardinia, joining Arbatax.

From Dorgali, take the panoramic road SS 125 which winds between the mountains. The landscapes are really superb and you will make plenty of photo stops on the road.

In the afternoon, head for the beaches around Arbatax such as Santa Maria di Navarrese or Lotzorai beach. In Arbatax, the red rocks formed by erosion are also to be seen.

Spend the night around Tortoli and Arbatax.

In the morning, I suggest you visit the caves of Su Marmuri, located in Ulassai, a 45-minute drive from Tortoli. The guided tour of around 1h30 costs €12 per person and allows you to discover several rooms with stalactites and stalagmites. It’s magnificent, super interesting and the guide speaks French very well.

20 minutes by car, you can then take a trip to the Scala San Giorgio offering a 360° panorama of the valley and the sea (1€ to go up).

End up reaching the Lequarci waterfall (30 minutes from La Scala by car) the opportunity to walk a little in the cool forest.

Spend the night in Arbatax or Tortoli.

Accommodation in Arbatax / Tortoli.

• La Tortorella: Located in Tortoli. Modern and spacious double room from €55 per night, breakfast included. Most: free private parking, location, calm.

Day 21: Villasimius

For this last leg of your 21-day tour of Sardinia, descend the entire coast to reach Villasimius.

Spend the day swimming at the many beautiful beaches on your way:

• Su Sirboni or Cala Francese beach:  Beautiful, fairly wild beach without too many people, the best for swimming
• Portu S’Ilixi beach   (south of the Spiaggia di Ferraxi): accessible by a dirt road. Large wild beach divided into 2 small beaches. Not too crowded and very pleasant for swimming.
• La Costa Rei:  a very fashionable seaside resort with a huge beach with private area and bars. Crowded because there are plenty of holiday villages nearby.
• La Cala Sinzias:  a trendy resort with a high-end private beach, in the same style as the Costa Rei.
• La Cala Pira:  pretty little beach, less crowded than the 2 previous ones. Fine sand and turquoise water, great for swimming!
• Simius beach:  large beach with lots of people
• La Cala Giunco,  the same as la plage de Simius
• La spiaggia del Riso,  next to the port
• Campulongu beach

Spend the night in Villasimius.

The next day, this 3 week Sardinia itinerary ends. Depending on the time of your return flight, reach Cagliari and the airport, located 1h10 from Villasimius.

• Falkensteiner Resort Capo Boi: Located 7 km from Villasimius, towards Capo Carbonara. Mediterranean-style double room tastefully decorated from €480 per night, breakfast and dinner included. The pluses: by the sea with a private beach, the swimming pools, the design, the magnificent setting. This is our recommendation for an upscale stay in Villasimius.
